Switzerland has also tightened the use of the whip in racing

Switzerland has also tightened the use of the whip in racing

Brian Rodriguez, March 16, 2024

In many countries, including the Netherlands, the use of the whip in trotting and racing has already been banned in the last year (light correction is allowed). As of July 1, 2024, the use of the whip will no longer be permitted in horse racing in Switzerland. The rider may take the whip with him in the race, but he must use it only to correct his shoulder and not to encourage the horse.

On March 9, owners, jockeys and trainers gathered for the general meeting of the Swiss Horseracing Association. They overwhelmingly approved the Board of Directors’ proposal to refrain from using the whip in the future. In practical terms, this means that whips may be worn, but may no longer be used to stimulate horses. It should only be placed over the shoulder to keep horses upright. This is a concession to the riding position of the rider, who has no options to influence the horse with weight or hip aids.

Shock absorbing whips are not enough

In Switzerland, as in Germany, for example, only shock-absorbing whips have recently been allowed. However, members of the Swiss Horseracing Association wanted to ensure greater animal welfare and approved the ban. The Board of Directors is now working on developing more details about the regulations and associated penalties.
