The US Senate finally approved new aid to allies Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The support package worth more than 88 billion euros must still be approved by the House of Representatives.
According to American media, it is still unclear whether the support package, which was also voted on on Sunday, will pass the House of Representatives. Republicans constitute the majority there. Board Chairman Mike Johnson has previously made clear that he believes the current proposal is inappropriate.
Rick Scott, the Republican senator representing Florida, also gives the support package little chance. “This will never pass the House of Representatives, nor will it become law,” he said in a speech earlier today.
The proposal includes about 56 billion euros for Ukraine. About $13 billion will also be allocated to Israel and more than $8.5 billion for humanitarian aid in areas such as the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank.
Republicans are demanding concessions
There has been debate in US policy about new support for Ukraine for months. This is because President Joe Biden's Democrats in Congress need Republican support. They are demanding concessions, such as tougher measures to reduce the number of migrants from Mexico.
Border control and measures to limit the flow of migrants are important election topics for Donald Trump. Not only is he opposed to the package, but he would also prefer to see support available only through loans.
