Ron DeSantis is likely to come in second place, with more than 22% of the vote, followed by Nikki Haley (20%).

    Trump's popularity is unprecedented

“This victory shows how attached Republicans are to Trump, and how much they hold on to good memories of the earlier Trump years,” reporter Eric Muthan says of the win.

“The people we talk to believe Trump deserves to be president for four more years and, moreover, they are not at all concerned about the charges against him.”

After Trump lost the 2020 election, the former president also had to deal with a lot of bad news. But despite the criminal charges, Iowa Republicans are once again voting en masse for Trump. “It really seems to be a turning point for Trump. It was clear that he was looking forward to it again and is confident that he will win this year,” he added.

    Number 2

Trump was already expected to win this primary, so it doesn't really come as a surprise. The most interesting thing about this election is who will become No. 2: DeSantis or Haley.

Ron DeSantis previously laid out his cards in Iowa and promised his supporters he would win, but DeSantis didn't get that far. However, he would survive defeat because he stayed with Healy.

    Iowa caucuses

These are the first primaries for the US presidential elections next November. This is seen as an important moment in the picture. If a candidate performs better than expected, it can give a boost to the rest of the campaign. Conversely, a disappointing result could mean the end of the campaign.

The Iowa primaries are conducted through what is called a caucus. This is an evening of discussion during which party members can be persuaded to vote for a candidate. A roll call vote will then be held to determine how much support the candidates will receive.

    Elections continue

After the Iowa primary, it's New Hampshire's turn next week. “Trump is less popular there, and Nikki Haley thinks she can get more votes there,” Mothan says.

Although Trump won the first term with this victory, the race is not over yet. It will take some time anyway, until the elections in November.

However, 69% of Republicans in national polls actually supported Trump. “So Trump is likely to get the Republican nomination, but anything can always happen in a US election.”
