A project to build a 3,800 km submarine cable linking Morocco to the United Kingdom and supplying 8% of the country’s electricity needs received “decisive” support from the British government.
During the first half of this year, British officials reportedly spent 9,500 hours on a project to lay a submarine cable between Morocco and the United Kingdom. Live energy news. Simon Morrish, CEO of Xlinks, the company responsible for the project, said: “We are extremely grateful for the time and dedication that the UK government has allocated to this project, which is a key solution to accelerating the country’s transition to clean energy sources.”

Morrish also stressed that this support is essential to provide UK households with safe, affordable and green energy in the face of the growing climate crisis. “The dedicated team from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero have worked hard to move forward with the contract award to Xlinks, investing more than 9,500 hours in the first six months of this year to evaluate the project as part of an ongoing cost-benefit analysis,” the official said.

In July, North Ayrshire Council’s planning committee granted UK company XLCC planning permission to build a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable production plant in Hunterston, Scotland. Construction is scheduled to begin next year, with cable production planned for 2026. The plant will produce key components to enable solar and wind energy production in the desert for the UK.
