The US Department of Transportation is not keen on reducing the space available to US airlines at Schiphol. The ministry is considering taking countermeasures, according to a letter seen by the news agency Afghan National Police.

According to Washington, banning the budget airline “JetBlue” from the Netherlands is “unjust and unreasonable” and contradicts European-American treaties. If it had been up to the American company JetBlue, Dutch companies would also have been obstructed in the United States.

The US department has now asked Dutch companies KLM, Martinair and TUI to send flight schedules to and from the US within seven days. Until then, Washington says it will wait with countermeasures.

Washington says it will discuss the decision with the Dutch government and the European Commission on November 13. He added: “If the consultations do not lead to a solution to this issue, the ministry is ready to consider taking further steps.”

The US government has protested several times against the shrinkage of Schiphol Airport, but says it has not received any reasonable evidence from the Dutch government. Due to the shrinkage of Schiphol Airport, fewer flights will be able to depart from Schiphol from next year.
