The Swiss city of Lugano accepts Bitcoin and Tether to pay municipal taxes

The Swiss city of Lugano accepts Bitcoin and Tether to pay municipal taxes

Brian Rodriguez, December 5, 2023

The City of Lugano has officially announced that it is offering citizens and businesses the opportunity to pay services and municipal taxes using cryptocurrency. This pioneering move aims to boost local adoption of Bitcoin and is part of Lugano’s broader initiative, Plan B.

Cryptocurrency payments are integrated via the Bitcoin Suisse platform

This action takes effect immediately, as Lugano accepts Bitcoin and the leading stablecoin, Tether, as legitimate payment methods. This is done through an automated process facilitated by the institutional-grade Swiss cryptocurrency platform Bitcoin Suisse.

Pay with Bitcoin and Tether for all local bills

According to the announcement, both citizens and businesses in Lugano will now be able to pay all local bills, regardless of the nature of the service or the amount of the bill, using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Payments can be made via the Swiss QR invoice system by simply scanning the code on the invoice and paying with your preferred mobile wallet and selected cryptocurrency.

Support from Bitcoin Suisse under Plan B

This cryptocurrency move by Lugano is part of Plan B, a strategic partnership with Tether to integrate Bitcoin technology and transform the city’s financial system. Bitcoin Suisse acts as a technology partner, supporting Lugano in the implementation of this integrated payment solution, allowing payment using both Bitcoin and Tether for tax collection and other municipal services.

Continuing previous efforts

Lugano began accepting cryptocurrencies to pay taxes in March 2022, as part of its partnership with Tether. Previously, the city has also deployed blockchain-based solutions, including the MyLugano app, its LVGA Points payment token, the Lugano digital franc and the 3Achain blockchain infrastructure.

Switzerland is a leader in accepting cryptocurrencies

Lugano is not the only city in Switzerland that is actively involved in adopting Bitcoin for payments and exploring blockchain technology. The Swiss canton of Zug began accepting Bitcoin and Ethereum to pay taxes in 2021, while Zermatt, in partnership with Bitcoin Swiss, introduced the option to pay a Bitcoin tax in January 2020. Lugano’s move reflects the ongoing trend of Swiss cities adopting innovative financial solutions and strengthening their position as leaders in cryptocurrency adoption.
