On Saturday, a group of people organized a demonstration to protest the rise of the far right after xenophobic and anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders won most seats in the Dutch elections.
Demonstrators gathered in Dam Square in the capital, Amsterdam, to protest the rise of the far right and the leader of the Freedom Party, Geert Wilders, in the general elections.
The crowd expressed concern after the rise of far-right parties in the country, which they said threatens the harmony of the Dutch public.
The demonstrators also called on the government to oppose Israel’s “apartheid policies” and called for an end to attacks on Gaza.
The demonstrators raised banners, some of which read: “No to fascism” and “GERT = fascism.” They also chanted slogans including “No to fascism” and “Stop racism.”
Lars Meijer, a 23-year-old protester, told Anadolu that he participated in the demonstration to stand against Wilders.
He said that the far-right leader aims to ban the Holy Quran and close mosques, and accused him of being a “fascist.”
Mayer also expressed concern about growing Islamophobia if Wilders became prime minister.
60-year-old protester Ross Korsti told Anadolu that everything in the country could get worse if the Freedom Party came to power.
The final official results of the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands confirmed the victory of far-right leader Geert Wilders.
The Dutch Electoral Board announced the results on Friday, confirming the results of exit polls conducted in November. The NL Times reported on November 22.
Geert Wilders’ far-right, anti-Islam Party for Freedom (PVV) was the main party with 37 seats, followed by GroenLinks-PvdA with 25 seats, a coalition led by former European Commissioner Frans Timmermans.
