Australian ports are partially active again after major cyber attack | Economy

Australia’s four major ports have reopened after a cyberattack. On Friday, terminal operator DP World was hacked. The company shut down its systems from the Internet when the attack was discovered.

The attack halted operations at the ports of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in the east of the country. The port of Fremantle in the west was also hit. DP World handles approximately 40 percent of the goods entering or leaving Australia.

Due to the shutdown of the systems, trucks are no longer able to unload or transport goods at the four ports. The terminal operator has a backlog of 30,000 shipping containers to clear, which have piled up across Australia during the lockdown. The company expects to be able to remove five thousand containers from the ports on Monday.

Although operations have partially resumed, DP World reported that services may remain disrupted for several days due to the cyber attack investigation and network protection measures. The operator is working with the Australian government and cyber authorities to investigate the attack.

With DP World also affected by local strikes in the coming days, a spokesman said it could take until next week before normal operations resume in Australia.
