Elvis and Nixon review by Jordi Gomez

Elvis and Nixon review by Jordi Gomez

Michael McCann, November 9, 2023

Elvis Presley would really like to have a personal conversation with the President of the United States: Nixon. However, the stubborn Nixon preferred not to meet the musician.

Elvis and Nixon are gone Jordi Gomez on November 8, 2023 Rated A 5 / 10.

Sometimes you have to watch a movie that misses the mark to realize how good other interpretations are. After watching Elvis & Nixon (2016), I gained a greater appreciation for the Elvis biopic (2022) and the film told through the eyes of Elvis Presley’s wife, Priscilla (2023).

Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi managed to portray a disguised Elvis in their films. In Elvis & Nixon, Michael Shannon takes on the role of “The King,” but he is never believable. Shannon makes no effort to imitate characteristics of Elvis, such as the tone of his voice or certain traits. This makes it even more obvious that you are looking at an actor wearing an inappropriate wig. In addition, his version of the famous musician does not come close to the charisma of the real Elvis.

Kevin Spacey’s performance as President Richard Nixon is much better. He knows exactly how to portray an old grouch, who by the way has no desire to receive Elvis in the White House. Their meeting contains some funny scenes, particularly how Elvis nonchalantly handles the rules that were previously explained to him, and Nixon’s surprised facial expressions. Their interaction is probably fine for about thirty minutes of moderate entertainment, which is still a concern in an hour and a half movie. This subject matter simply does not lend itself to a feature film. This would have made a nice short film.

Elvis & Nixon are uninteresting for large portions of the film, and one of the main characters’ performances are poor as well. Why make a film about this topic with this angle? Coming up with your own backstory for the famous photo of Elvis Presley and President Nixon is probably more interesting than the actual event.
