(Almost) everyone now realizes that there is a climate crisis. The Amsterdam Warm Up Festival, which runs until Sunday 5 November 2023, offers a broad program including live music, art, science, activity workshops and live performances at Tolhuistuin, Treehouse NDSM and De Rietwijker. FC Hyena shows climate films.
There are too many activities at the Warming Up Festival to name them all. A few are mentioned. On the grounds of Tolhuistuin there is an art trail featuring the works of nearly thirty artists inspired by the climate issue. Treehouse NDSM presents the group exhibition “Labours of Love,” in which artists share their perspectives on climate catastrophe as a result of “patriarchal, colonial, and extractive modes of thought.” The works in the exhibition revolve around “the love of coexistence with other beings.”

FC Hyena participates in the Warming Up Film Festival. Under it Deep rise (Mathieu Ritz, 2023), a documentary about the exploitation of the deep seabed. In search of minerals, more and more mining is likely to be done at sea. After that there will be a discussion about deep sea mining.
Documentary High temperature (Jacqueline van Meejaarden, Rahad Desai, and Anita Khanna, 2023) follows activists in South Africa in their fight for climate justice. Southern Africa is suffering badly from climate catastrophe, but the rich world, which has largely caused the climate problem, barely notices.
Documentary Esther and the law (Tatiana Sheltema, 2023) The film is about one woman’s struggle against a multinational corporation. The film depicts Esther Kiobel, who fights for justice for her husband. He was one of nine men executed in Nigeria in 1995 on charges of rebelling against the pollution caused by Shell to their country. Nearly twenty-five years later, Esther filed a lawsuit against Shell in the Netherlands.
Documentary film for young people Planet B (Peter Van Ecke, 2023) follows two thirteen-year-old friends who join the Extinction Rebellion. If they are caught, it leads to a greater willingness to take action in some, but suspicion in others.
Warming Up Shorts contains seven fun, educational and critical films for children and young people around the world (The Future). Adventures about plastic soup, an astronaut trying to establish life on Mars, and a pig that powers the city. But also a film about the underground adventures of a vole and about beachgoers who can’t find a way out in a heatwave.
After all, it is not a documentary, but a fictional film based on reality In the dust (Orlando van Einsiedel, 2021). The drama revolves around Pakistani social activist Parveen Rahman, who fought for the (land) rights of the poor. She was killed in 2013 by the landowner mafia.
