Strikes at General Motors and Stellantis auto plants in the United States, which began last Friday, are being expanded. Sean Fine, president of the UAW, made the announcement on Friday. This means the cessation of work in 38 other factories, spread across twenty American states.
Employees at the Ford auto plant also continue their strike. But according to the union, that company has made important concessions since the strike began a week ago. For this reason, strikes will not be expanded at these automakers’ plants. “We know Ford is serious about reaching an agreement. “It’s a different story at GM and Stellantis,” Fine says. “It’s not ready yet at Ford,” he says.
The UAW is demanding, among other things, a 40 percent pay raise for employees of the three automakers, also known as Detroit’s Big Three. Car companies offered just over 20 percent, but without the additional benefits demanded by the union. “As we’ve been saying for weeks, we’re not going to wait forever to get fair contracts in the Big Three,” says Fine.
