Cabinet: The Netherlands is ready to provide aid to earthquake-stricken Morocco

Brian Rodriguez, September 10, 2023

Foreign Ministers Hanke Bruins-Sloet and Lesje Schreinmacher (Development Cooperation) said that the Netherlands is ready to help Morocco after the devastating earthquake. But no official request for assistance has yet been submitted from the Moroccan government.

“The news about the earthquake in Morocco is very sad and disturbing. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. The Netherlands is ready to help when needed,” Schreinmacher wrote on X.

What very sad and disturbing news about the earthquake that struck Morocco. My thoughts go to the victims and their relatives. The Netherlands stands ready to provide assistance when necessary.

More than 800 people were killed in the earthquake that struck the south of the North African country. Moreover, more than 300 people were injured in the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred near Marrakesh.

The Cabinet can send an urban search and rescue (USAR) team if requested. This team consists of search and rescue specialists (often with dogs) as well as nurses, doctors and construction experts.

Many Dutch politicians are calling for assistance to Morocco wherever possible. “What a disaster. There are so many victims and so much concern for their loved ones right now. Let the Netherlands help where it can,” said D66 party leader Jan Paternott.

A similar appeal was also made by SGP Group Chairman Chris Stover. “Untold suffering in Morocco. We pray for those affected, their relatives and rescue workers. May the Netherlands also provide all possible assistance!”

Representative Faisal Bolkjar heard that aid efforts are not yet going smoothly in Morocco. “I just got off the phone with a local politician in Ouarzazate. People are surprised and amazed. Relief is coming slowly. It is important that the Netherlands is ready to help quickly.”

DENK’s Farid Azerkan heard from his relatives that the damage was severe, he reported.

what a shame. I called friends and family in Marrakesh, Agadir, Rabat, Salé and even Meknes. The destruction is enormous. People are shocked and worried and are sleeping outside. https://t.co/0suQkzsyAj
