Paul had to do everything he could to beat American Shamir Little in Bellinzona, Switzerland. Only at the final hurdle did the 23-year-old from Amersfoort distance himself from Little, who finished second in Budapest behind Paul. Dutchwoman Kathleen Peters came in third place with a time of 55.25 seconds.
Peters and Paul also won the world title in the 4×400 meters in Budapest, with Leke Klavier and Evelin Sahlberg.
The Dutch athletics team won a total of five medals in Budapest: gold for Boll and the women’s relay, silver and bronze for Sifan Hassan and bronze for heptathlete Anouk Vetter. This was the Netherlands’ best ever performance at a World Cup in Athletics.
Ball finished her season with two Diamond League appearances. On Friday, she will run her favorite event, the Diamond League, in Brussels. A week later, she participated in the final weekend of the Diamond League in Eugene, America.
