Prime Ministerial Candidate Mona Keizer Is Drawing Voters to the BBB, and Committee Members Are Excited

Prime Ministerial Candidate Mona Keizer Is Drawing Voters to the BBB, and Committee Members Are Excited

Jeffrey Clark, September 2, 2023

The former CDA member is viewed by committee members as an experienced, honest, reliable and strong woman. Additionally, people seem to think she has a strong, individual opinion, which makes people wonder if she’s a team player.

37% of Dutch voters indicate that they trust Keijzer as a politician. This is less than confidence in Van der Plas (55%), Wischelgoose (49%), and Umtzigt (69%). Keijzer received higher scores than Timmermans (24 percent) and Wilders (29 percent).

When it comes to voters who prefer the BBB, confidence is much higher. 71 percent of people who considered voting for the BBB in House elections in recent months say they trust Mona Keijzer.

New prime minister?

With Keizer’s nomination, there is also a chance that she will become the new Prime Minister of the Netherlands. 25% of Dutch voters believe that Keijzer would be a good prime minister for the Netherlands. This is almost as much as Timmermans did and twice as much as Caroline van der Plas herself. Only Yeşilgoz stood out by a large margin: 42% of respondents thought she would be a good prime minister.

Keijzer scored more than twice, as did her fellow party member Caroline van der Plas, who does not consider herself suitable for the premiership. “So this doesn’t seem like a bad move for the BBB,” says pollster Gijs Rademaker of RTL News.

BBB attracts voters

Keijzer’s return could also bring additional voters to the BBB. The question “Does Mona Kejzer make you more or less likely to vote for the BBB?” It clearly shows that “far-right” voters in particular are enthusiastic about Keijser.

An eighth of voters who voted for the FPO in the 2021 House of Representatives elections are more likely to vote for the BBB in the next election due to Keijzer’s arrival. For JA21 voters this matters to a quarter of the electorate, and for Democracy Forum voters it appears to account for up to a third. This effect is less clear for other parties.

The survey was conducted on September 1, 2023, among more than 14,000 members of the RTL News panel. After weighting, it represents five variables: age, gender, education, employment, and political preference. The RTL News Committee has more than 35,000 members.
