The committee held a closing public session on Monday. Committee members were to vote on a recommendation for a possible impeachment of Donald Trump, who the committee’s vice chair said was “unfit to hold new positions of power.”
The members, seven Democrats and two Republicans, tonight presented the results of their months-long investigation into what happened on January 6, 2021. Thousands of people were heard, a wealth of documents reviewed and examined and several highly mediated public hearings took place. According to the committee members, it is clear from those conclusions that Trump was partially responsible for the storming of the Capitol.
“Voting in the United States is an act of faith and hope,” Democrat Penny Thompson said in Monday’s opening debate. “This belief in our system is the bedrock of American democracy. When trust is damaged, all of democracy is damaged. Donald Trump has damaged that trust. He lost the 2020 election and he knew it, but he’s still trying to live up to staying in the force.”
Liz Cheney says Donald Trump is unfit to be in office again. “Whoever behaves as such at that time should never again hold a position of power in this country,” she said.
The committee’s vote is mainly symbolic, and members cannot bring charges against the former president themselves. Ultimately, the Minister of Justice must decide whether or not to prosecute.
