“Nobert’s in Orange, Nobert’s Orange!” Football supporters Go Ahead Eagles and SC Heerenveen have sung it a lot this year, perhaps as a joke. Andreas Nobert himself said: “Maybe it’s the Frisian national team.” But this is really so: national coach Louis van Gaal allows the goalkeeper, who is more than two meters tall, to make his debut in the orange. 50 International by Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk starts his 50th cap for Orange today. In the first match of the World Cup against Senegal, the captain forms the center of the defense with Matthijs de Ligt and Nathan Ake from Manchester City.

31-year-old Van Dijk made his debut on October 10, 2015 in the first leg of the European Championship qualifier against Kazakhstan: 1-2. Then Jorginho Wijnaldum and Wesley Sneijder scored the goals. Current assistant Danny Blind was the national coach at the time. Robin van Persie played his 100th international match in that match.

Steven Bergwijn plays his 25th match for Orange against Senegal, thus receiving a KNVB silver bowl, part of this number of duels. Bergwijn forms the vanguard against the Senegalese with Vincent Jansen. Aki starts his 30th cap and midfielder Stephen Burgess starts his 40th.

Squad not one love because of the yellow card

The football associations of the Netherlands, England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland announced in a joint statement that they have asked football captains not to wear the OneLove bracelet during World Cup matches. Earlier today it was announced that Orange captain Virgil van Dijk would not be wearing the squad later today for the first match against Senegal.

“FIFA has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the band on the pitch. As national federations, we cannot put our players in a situation where they may face sporting sanctions, including yellow cards. We have therefore asked our captains not to wear armbands during World Cup matches.

“We were willing to pay fines that normally apply to dress code violations and we have a strong obligation to wear the tie. However, we cannot put our players in a situation where they might be shown a card or even forced off the field.”

Record in Orange for Louis van Gaal

Louis van Gaal can get his hands on a special record today in the World Cup in Qatar. If the Netherlands win their first group match against Senegal, the 71-year-old from Amsterdam will be the national coach with the most wins with the Orange to his name, i.e. 38.

Van Gaal now shares the pole position with Dick Advocaat. Hagenar, 75, needed 62 matches for 37 victories, and Van Gaal reached that mark after 58 caps. Both coaches have been the national coach of Orange in three different periods. Britain’s Bob Glendinning, coach of the national team from 1923 to 1940, is third on the list with 36 victories. Marco van Basten (35 victories) and Bert van Marwijk (34) finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The fact that Van Gaal can only take the lead is due to the efforts of the KNVB. The national coach suffered a hip fracture a year ago, before the decisive match with Norway (2-0) in the World Cup qualifiers, after he fell while standing on his bike. He was therefore forced to follow the match in a wheelchair from De Kuip’s sky box. Assistant Danny Blind was an official coach that day. “It later became clear that this could be changed upon request, after which the National Football League decided to do so,” the FA said.
