Britain’s King Charles is very concerned about the floods that have hit the Australian state of Victoria in recent weeks. In a letter to Victoria’s governor, Linda Dessau, Charles wrote that he sympathized with all those affected.

“While I realize this emergency is far from over, I would like to commend the extraordinary efforts of the emergency services, the Australian Defense Force and the thousands of volunteers who have been involved in the recovery effort,” Charles wrote. “It has been so inspiring to see communities coming together to protect homes and livestock and support each other during this incredibly difficult time,” said the King, who is also Australia’s Head of State.

Since heavy rains fell last Monday, areas in the states of New South Wales and Victoria have been hit by flooding. Homes were swept away, and bridges and highways were flooded. As a result, some inner towns are cut off from the outside world and cannot be reached by rescuers or supplies. According to the Australian Weather Service, some areas received as much rain in 24 hours as is typical in an entire month.
