American automaker Tesla has considered exporting its cars made in China to the United States. Sources told Reuters news agency.
The group’s largest factory is located in Shanghai. So far, Tesla’s strategy has been to build the cars it sells in North America at its plants in Fremont, California and Austin, Texas.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk called the reports on Twitter “inaccurate.” But according to sources, it has already been investigated whether parts from Chinese suppliers comply with regulations in the United States and Canada. The reasons for the plan to get cars from China are lower prices of Chinese raw materials, favorable currency effects, and higher costs in the United States. It’s a Model 3 and a Model Y, which could ship to the US next year.
Tesla will not be the first American automaker to ship Chinese-made vehicles to the United States. General Motors has done this before with the Buick Envision SUV. Then GM filed an unsuccessful petition for a 25 percent exemption from the US tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
