COTA wants to change F1 support programme: ‘MotoGP or racing with celebrities’

The law to support the US Grand Prix in Austin should become more interesting in the future. With the W Series canceled, only two historic championships will be presented this weekend in addition to Formula 1 itself. Bobby Epstein, president of the Circuit of the Americas, hopes to make the support work more enjoyable for the audience.

Last year there were 400,000 visitors at the Formula 1 weekend at the Texas circuit and this year 440,000 fans are expected to turn off the track. This could quickly rise to half a million people, but then the Circuit of the Americas will have to take steps to make the support work more enjoyable. The W series didn’t come to the US due to financial issues, so there are now only Masters Endurance Legends and Masters Historic races as well as F1.

Epstein explained his ideas to racer: “Two or three support championships would be fine. It would be great even, and if it can’t be F2 or F3, we need to think creatively. I’d like to see motorsports over the weekend in Formula One. I think it would be So much fun and fans will love it too, so that’s what we’re looking at right now.” Epstein even suggested races with taxis from several American cities: “We have to entertain the public anyway, but I don’t want to exclude the pure racing enthusiast. We have to find the right product on the track that the public will be happy with. I think there was a sense of disappointment because W Series didn’t come here, but it was such a short day that we couldn’t arrange a replacement.”

MotoGP or celebrity racing

“It doesn’t have to be MotoGP, it could be something different with motorcycles. Just different types of racing,” Epstein continued. “If you look back in time, F1 had great races with celebrities. That’s something we need to think about. It could be really fun. I think F1 attracts a lot of celebrities and something like that hasn’t been done for a while. It’s definitely Things worth discussing. If Formula 3 or Formula 2 could come along, it would probably be better.”
