Lorena Webbs and Fabio Jacobsen must enter the European titles on the road to Holland. National coaches Luis Junivik and Kos Morinhout have announced their selections for the European Cycling Championship, which will take place in Munich in August.
The men will run 207.9 kilometers on August 14, ending up in Munich. On some climbs in the first kilometers, the path is almost flat. “The first half of the course is challenging, but the second part is consistent. The speed will be high anyway. With this strong team we can support Fabio well and we want to get him as best as possible for a fast sprint,” says Nutwood.
In the 24 kilometer individual trial on August 17, only Gus van Emden (Jumbo-Visma) for the men will start on behalf of the Netherlands. “It’s a diverse course that you’re going to fly,” Morinhout predicts. Ranking the top ten is a realistic goal with Gus.

The women will also run 128 kilometers on August 21, with a finish in Munich. “Given a glimpse of the road race, I expect a fast race at the end,” Gunnewijk says. “Lorena Webbs is currently one of the fastest women in the peloton, and she has two stage wins during the Tour de France Women’s. So Lorena is the leader in the European Championship.”
“We’re definitely going for the trophies. For example, we have world champion Eileen van Dijk at the start of the trial period (also August 14, editor),” said the women’s national coach. “We’re going to double the gold.”

Why wasn’t Matthew van der Poel selected in the men’s selection? The European Championship comes too early for the Dutch champion. Van der Poel came down last month in the 10th stage of the Tour de France, then hasn’t touched his bike for ten days and has only ridden his first lap since last week. So there is no EC yet.
“I also said to Koss (Moerenhout, editor), ‘I’m not going to do that,'” Van der Poel said last week. He is expected to participate in the World Championships in Wollongong. “I hope to be the best version of myself in Australia, yeah.”
