The Uruguayan Football Association confirmed, on Wednesday, that Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile wish to jointly organize the World Cup in 2030.

AUF says a press conference will be held on August 2 where the candidacy will be explained. In 2030, it will be 100 years since Uruguay hosted the inaugural Men’s World Cup. The host country won that tournament by defeating Argentina 4-2 in the final.

Chile actually hosted the World Cup in 1962, when Brazil became world champions for the second time in a row. Argentina also played the role of organizer of the World Cup: in 1978. At that time, the host country settled with the Netherlands in the final battle (3-1 after extra time). Paraguay has never hosted a World Cup final.

Never before has the World Cup been held in more than two different countries. The first will be created in 2026 with three hosts: Mexico, Canada and the United States. As of that year, no less than 48 countries will participate in the global final tournament.

Mario Kempes was Argentina’s top scorer in the 1978 World Cup with six goals.

This year’s World Cup will be held in Qatar. On November 21, the Netherlands and Senegal will play the opening match at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.
