The US Supreme Court’s draft opinion on abortion, which was leaked on Tuesday, is correct. This was confirmed by the Chief Justice, John Roberts. He stresses that the decision is not final yet.

The draft ruling states that the Supreme Court wants to abolish the right to abortion. The majority of the nine justices in the highest court in the United States voted for it. However, Chief Justice Roberts objects that the position is indeed final.

With this ruling, the court will invalidate the previous historical rulings. Among them is the famous Roe v. Wade ruling of 1973, which guarantees the right to abortion in the national constitution.

The right to abortion is still currently enshrined in the US Constitution, but states are allowed to restrict it in their own laws. As a result, abortion is accessible in some states, but not in others. Half of the states are expected to immediately impose broad abortion bans if the Constitution is amended.

Roberts went on to say that an investigation into the concept leak is underway. The draft dates back to February, but it’s got on the political news site Politicopublished Tuesday. “This is a breach of court honesty, and is intended to harm the integrity of the court,” Roberts said. “The court will not be affected by that.”

The US Supreme Court has a conservative majority. Six of the nine current judges have been appointed by a Republican president. Five of them voted to reject the ruling. The three Democratic-appointed justices serve to dissenting positions.

Biden and Harris want to fight for agency

US President Joe Biden has already announced that he will oppose the court’s decision. He describes a woman’s freedom of choice as “essential” and “part of personal freedom”.

Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized in a statement what she believes is at stake: “Roe v. Wade ensures a woman’s right to choose an abortion. In essence, it also protects the fundamental right to privacy.”

According to Harris, “Obviously opponents want to punish women and deny them the right to make decisions about their bodies. Now is the time to fight with everything we have for women and for our country.”
