A new study in the leading New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) shows that people who build up their immune system through infection with SARS-CoV2 are protected for much longer than people who gained immunity through vaccination. Six to eight months after infection, natural immunity (immunity obtained through a previous infection) was found to protect on average six times better than vaccination.
The hybrid model, in which an additional vaccination dose was given after a previous infection, did not confer more protection than infection alone.
This study confirms an Israeli study from last year that found that natural immunity provides seven times greater protection than vaccination. However, it has not yet been investigated whether additional vaccination after infection may be beneficial. According to the NEJM study, this does not appear to be the case.
Natural immunity is recognized in Europe for a maximum of six months. Countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and Indonesia still require proof of vaccination to enter the country and do not recognize natural immunity at all.
The physician group believes that science has provided sufficient evidence to consider natural immunity equivalent to vaccination in all cases.
