United States President Joe Biden on Thursday introduced the new White House press secretary, Karen Jean-Pierre, 44. two Top For the White House, because it’s not the first time a black person has taken on this role. It’s also the first time someone from the LQBTQ+ community has held this position.

Effective May 13, Karen-Jean-Pierre will succeed current Press Secretary Jeanne Basaki. She is currently the Deputy Press Secretary. Psaki called her successor on Twitter a “wonderful woman” with a “moral core”. “I can’t wait to see her shine and bring her own style and grace to the stage,” she said.

Psaki officially introduced her successor at the daily press conference on Thursday. “I did not lose sight of it,” said Jean-Pierre, moving, “that this is a historic moment.” “I understand that it is very important to be here for so many people in different communities. I am really honored.” It is the first time in US history that the face of government is an openly gay black woman.

President Joe Biden also paid tribute to Jean-Pierre. “Karen not only brings the experience, talent, and integrity needed to this challenging work. She will also continue to lead the way in communicating the work of the Biden-Harris administration on behalf of the American people.”

Jean-Pierre was born on the French Caribbean island of Martinique, but grew up in Queens, New York. She is a former political analyst for MSNBC News. Prior to joining the press team, she served as Chief of Staff to Vice President Kamala Harris during her campaign. She also participated in former President Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns. Prior to that, she was a consultant and spokesperson for MoveOn, a major progressive public policy advocacy group.

Psaki’s current press secretary will be working for MSNBC, possibly as a TV presenter there. In his speech, Biden praised Saki for her work as press secretary. “Gene Psaki set the standard for the return of decency, respect, and honor to the White House press room.”
