The draw for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is approaching. There are only a few qualifiers left before the FIFA rankings that will be used to determine the lottery are revealed.
A team from each of the four pots will be drawn into eight randomly selected groups in Friday’s lottery. As hosts, Qatar automatically secures a place in Pot 1, while the rest of the teams – except for those who went through qualifiers in June – fall based on the FIFA rankings on March 31. The strange thing about the draw is that it will be held in three undisclosed locations for the World Cup. In June, two intercontinental playoffs and one UEFA playoff (postponed due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine) will be contested in June, with the three eventual winners determined in a lottery.
In the same lottery, only European countries can be grouped together (a maximum of two in a group), and teams from all other continental confederations cannot be combined (for example, the United States cannot be in Canada).

The first lottery lottery was decided thanks to Portugal’s victory on Tuesday. Host Qatar will be the coveted first group of several teams, followed by Brazil, Belgium and France. The biggest omission for this stacked group? Current FIFA Team No. 6, Italy. North Macedonia’s Ozori were shocked in the semi-finals of the UEFA qualifiers and will now miss the World Cup for the second time in a row. The country that is second in the cup after Brazil (and European champions last year) will have to wait another four years to end the drought.

This is likely to be where the top two teams in CONCACAF will land. Except for the United States losing six goals or a big loss to El Salvador from Mexico and a big win for Costa Rica over the Americans, both teams will qualify without having to play in the Intercontinental match. This means that you will share the 2nd pot with the 2014 champion, Germany, runner-up Croatia and others. If the collapse occurred before the United States or before Eltry, Senegal would enter the fray. If not, the highest-ranked African country and Africa Cup of Nations winner will go to Pot 3.

The story of CONCACAF (and perhaps the World Cup qualifiers as a whole), Canada qualified for the men’s World Cup for the first time in 36 years. The expected FIFA ranking means it will drop to third or fourth place, pending Wednesday’s results. If Canada relegated to Tier 4 and somehow sent the United States or Mexico to the intercontinental play-off, Cameroon would also drop to third place with Tunisia.

A lot is happening here and not everything is decided but the big picture is that this will consist of the three teams already closed, likely Two from Canada, Tunisia and Cameroon, then the winner of the European final and the two intercontinental play-offs. Wales, although currently in 20th place, will enter the fourth pot due to the postponement of matches if they win their matches with the winners from Ukraine and Scotland. The fourth seed CONCACAF (possibly Costa Rica) will play the Intercontinental Play-off with the winner of the OFC play-off match (New Zealand). The other play-off is between the winner of the AFC match (UAE vs Australia) against the fifth seeded team in CONMEBOL (Peru). The winners of both matches will qualify for Qatar and take their place in the fourth pot of the lottery.
