The White House nominated Lieutenant General Michael Eric Corella to lead US Central Command.

The nomination was mentioned for the first time before The Wall Street Journal This was confirmed by The Hill.

On Wednesday, the Senate received Corella’s nomination and referred it to the Senate Armed Services Committee. according to congresverslagen. However, records do not indicate which job Corella was nominated for.

If confirmed, Corella will replace General Kenneth McKenzie, who has headed Central Command since March 2019.

The Pentagon said there was nothing to be announced at this time.

Corella, a resident of Elk River, Minnesota, is currently the commander of the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in a position I had previously held Since 2019.

Prior to this position, Corella was chief of staff of the US Central Command. Previously, he served as the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division in the United States Army.

Corella will oversee military operations in 21 countries in Northeast Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South Asia.

His appointment comes amid several attacks on US forces in Syria and Iraq this week alone. This week, the forces launched attacks on bases near the village of Jarir in Syria, and carried out two strikes by drones targeting forces in Iraq.

Meanwhile, US forces in Iraq continue to play an advisory role, as part of an agreement to formally end the combat mission against ISIS.

Corella’s nomination also comes as the United States continues to grapple with the fallout from its chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 31, and talks continue to bring Iran back to the nuclear deal it struck under Obama.
