South Korea said North Korea fired an unidentified projectile into the waters off the Korean Peninsula

South Korea said North Korea fired an unidentified projectile into the waters off the Korean Peninsula

The Japanese government said in a tweet on Twitter that the missile may have been a “ballistic missile”.

The Japan Coast Guard said the likely ballistic missile fell into the sea at 8:23 a.m. local time. All ships in transit are encouraged to check for updates.

The Japanese government also said it would confirm the safety of planes and ships.

“It is very unfortunate that North Korea has been firing missiles since last year,” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters on Wednesday.

The government of Japan will continue to intensify vigilance and monitoring.”

Kishida added that the government is still analyzing information on the missile’s flight path and location.

It is the first time a missile has been launched since Pyongyang said it had successfully launched a new submarine-launched ballistic missile in October last year.

The submarine missile test came after weeks of heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula, with cooperation between Pyongyang and Seoul intensifying as military skills soar. Last year, the country also accelerated its weapons testing program, including the launch of what it believes to be a new hypersonic missile in late September.

Under international law, Pyongyang is prohibited from testing ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons.

Wednesday’s release comes just days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was released in his year-end speech acknowledging there was a “food problem” in the country. The speech concluded an important five-day meeting of his Workers’ Party of Korea.

Kim also praised the military progress he made during his 10th year in power, but did not specifically mention South Korea or the United States, except for a brief reference to the politics of inter-Korean relations and foreign affairs.

“North Korea is signaling that it will not stop the development of Omicron missiles and household food shortages,” said Leif Eric Easley, a professor at the University of Iowa in Seoul.

This test demonstrates Kim’s system of contempt for inner suffering. Instead of praising humanitarian aid, Pyongyang is violating UN Security Council resolutions in ways that merit more economic sanctions.”
