Currently, the United States is not easing entry restrictions for travelers from Europe and other countries. “Due to the delta formula, we will maintain current travel restrictions at this time,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Monday.

Psaki said the delta variant would cause the number of coronavirus cases to rise in the United States, especially among unvaccinated people. She said there was little chance of the rules changing in the coming weeks.

People from the Schengen Area, Great Britain and Ireland will not be able to travel to the United States since March 2020. A “travel ban” has also been implemented on various dates for South Africa, Brazil, China, India and Iran.

Washington announced in early June that it would form working groups with Canada, Mexico, the European Union and the United Kingdom to address the issue of international travel. The European Union opened all its borders to Americans at the end of last month on the condition that they be vaccinated or provide a negative test. European Union countries have requested the same for their citizens who wish to travel to the United States.

The US borders with Canada and Mexico will remain closed until at least August 21 to people who do not have a “necessary reason” to enter the United States. Meanwhile, Canada announced that vaccinated Americans will be able to cross the border from August 9, even without the necessary reasons. This means that vaccinated Americans can visit Canada and go on vacation there.

US airlines, hit hard by the coronavirus crisis, have lobbied for months in Washington to quickly lift travel restrictions. They wanted to fly large numbers of tourists back to the US in the summer, including from Europe and Latin America. These efforts have so far been in vain.
