Soldiers will assist GGD staff on the test streets of Flevoland. They will be used from Monday when coronavirus tests are conducted. GGD hopes to increase testing capacity in this way.

31 defense personnel will be trained on Thursday. “It is currently very busy on all the testing streets in the Netherlands. Many people in Flevoland also want to be sure of the complaints they have. With the help of the Ministry of Defense we can test more people, faster,” says Aldrik Dijkstra of GGD. He acknowledges that there is currently a shortage of staff. “We are recruiting these individuals, but not all of them yet, so it is very helpful if the military gives us a helping hand.”

It remains unclear whether defense personnel will also assist with vaccination. “They can also help with that,” adds Dijkstra. “These are national decisions and we can’t make them at the regional level ourselves.”

In total, approximately 400 military personnel across the Netherlands are trained to take the tests.
