The first thing you notice are the wide aisles. Being so used to narrow hotel corridors that you have to squeeze each other is a relief. Rich red and gold rug on the floor, seating areas throughout, dim lighting and tall dark wood doors.

The rooms offer everything you would expect from this special heritage in the heart of the Swiss city of Lausanne. Lots of space, very luxurious interior with lots of soft green and off-white, bench with two chairs, and a welcome bottle of wine at the table. To emphasize the uniqueness of this special place once again, a beautiful marble fireplace.

The view isn’t bad either. On the small balcony I rested on one of the two metal chairs. Behind some of the city’s rooftops, Lake Geneva stretches in front of us, bordered by the Alps in the background. Time for a drink from the (free) minibar. Of course there is also a Nespresso coffee machine.

“Coco Chanel Had Her Own Suite”

The Palais de Lausanne was built in 1915 and is grandiose, but it’s not the lack of maintenance that sometimes spoils the pleasure of staying in such historic hotels. On the contrary, the huge bathroom looks as if it was recently renovated. Dark tile with a golden sheen and everything, from the faucets to the shower head, is of beautiful heavy quality. Multicolored marble, gold-tone accessories, bathrobes and thick towels complete this bathroom and shower palace.

For those who want to shower more extensively: the hotel has a spa as well as a beauty center of 2,100 square meters including an indoor pool and hammam. You can dine at the gastronomic restaurant La Table du Lausanne Palace (one Michelin star), but also at three other places such as the Mediterranean restaurant Côté Jardin (summer terrace and three bars, here also breakfast).

Even the lobby is already a small party. Big, majestic, a real tree in the middle. Bar 1915 is centrally located and is the meeting point for hotel guests. By the way, there are many bars in this hotel, needless to mention.

Belle’s beautiful symbol – the facade still radiates the grandeur of the past – has always been more than just a hotel, as we read in history. Of course, in recent years, the presidents of the International Olympic Committee, as well as royalty, celebrities (Nicole Kidman, Elton John) and politicians have resided here. Designer Coco Chanel had her own stand there that still bears her name. Also in 2021 the Palais de Lausanne is the gathering place for high society.
