KOLLUMERZWAAG – On Sunday, November 7, the Johnny Cash Service was held at the Grote Kerk in Kollumerzwaag. pastor. Peter van de Bebel from Assen leads the church service and Herbert Altina and his band perform songs of such greatness in country music.

The dark and bright side of America’s greatest country singer is reflected in the service’s theme: “helpless and longing.” The service is organized by the Missionary Committee of the Protestant Congregation in Kollumerzwaag. At the entrance there is a collection of expenses and care for prisoners in the Netherlands.

Johnny Cash (1932-2003) was raised in a poor family in the southern United States. His father was a cotton farmer near the Mississippi River. Cash made music at a young age, and during his military service in Germany, he bought his first guitar. In the 50s, he received his first hit: “I walk in line.” His deep baritone voice impressed his audience. Then several songs followed, the most famous of which are “Ring of Fire” and “The Man in Black”. He got his nickname from this hit and before that he often sang in black. The song signifies his involvement with the bottom of society: the poor, the Indians, the prisoners. This song is sung during a church service. Dutch translations are also available.

Because of his busy schedule, Johnny Cash became addicted to amphetamines and drink in the 1960s. Thanks to his second wife John Carter and his faith in God, he eventually recovered. He was so full of faith in the 1970s that he made a film at his own expense in Israel about the life of Jesus: The Gospel Way. At that time he was on stage with the great American missionary Billy Graham. However, he has resorted to addictive substances every now and then.

In addition to country and other pop songs, Cash has also released Gospel and Christmas albums. He often appeared on stage with his musical wife June. Cash has been one of the most influential singers both inside and outside the country. He has had a huge impact on the music of artists and bands such as U2, Bob Dylan, and Nick Cave.
