The American voter does not ultimately determine who will become the President of the United States, this honor is already reserved for the 538 electoral votes in the United States. Electoral College. The candidate called 270 electors Standing behind him, he will live in the White House for the next four years. Presidential candidates are allotted those electoral votes on the basis of the states they win: whoever wins a majority in a state also gets all of that state’s electoral votes. Only Maine and Nebraska are exceptions to this rule, and their electoral votes are (possibly) distributed among several candidates.
In some states, the outcome is already known in advance: California and New York are almost certain to go for Democratic Biden. The same for Trump, and, for example, the traditionally Republican states of Kentucky and West Virginia. In a few dozen other states, the battle seems to have already been won, but as the cliché goes: the elector always has the last word, of course.
