Esme Morgan’s hopes of making her England debut were thwarted by an injury she sustained while playing for Manchester City last weekend, forcing her to withdraw from Sarina Wegman’s roster.
The defender picked up a calf injury in the early stages of City’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the Academy on Sunday due to a calf injury.
Morgan has been called up as one of two potential arrivals – the other being Manchester United captain Katie Zelm – for the World Cup qualifying matches against North Macedonia and Luxembourg.
The Football Association confirmed that the 20-year-old would not be replaced.
Wigmann, who was appointed England coach more than a year ago, will finally make her first game on Friday when North Macedonia faces St Mary’s in Southampton, with a trip to Luxembourg four days later.
She remained in her role as president of the Netherlands until the end of the Olympics, when her team was defeated by the United States in the quarter-finals on penalties.

Wigman’s England first team is also under-served by Lucy Bronze due to injury, along with two Morgan City teammates Kyra Walsh and Eli Roebuck.
