British supermarket chain Tesco has taken an unusual step in the competition for rare truck drivers. The chain is offering a bonus of 1,000 pounds (1,176 euros) to truck drivers who sign an employment contract with the company before the end of September. British news agency PA Media reported this on Wednesday.

The offer can be found in many job postings, says PA Media. Supermarket chains, logistics companies and other sectors face a serious staff shortage as many workers in the UK either have COVID-19 or have been quarantined due to high-risk contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.

Brexit does not make it easier: due to new controls and procedures, many European freight forwarders have stopped their UK flights. Many shoppers have shared pictures of empty supermarket shelves on social media in recent days and weeks.
