Surinamese Airlines is struggling with huge debts and teetering on the brink of collapse. The Suriname government pumps millions into the company each year to make up for losses, but the question is how long that can last.

Suriname Airlines’ last planes were recently booked, forcing the airline to find alternatives to be able to offer flights. An Air Belgium Airbus A340-300 has been deployed for months on the only remote route between Paramaribo and Schiphol.

According to the newspaper from the West Jubithana says an international consulting firm has been appointed to look into the future possibilities of Suriname Airlines. One option is to (partially) privatize the company. Now the airline is still in the hands of the state, so it is political interference that sets the course.

To keep Suriname affordable, Suriname should look for foreign airlines. American Airlines previously announced that it would start a scheduled flight between Miami and Paramaribo, and Copa Airlines from Panama also hopes to return to Suriname soon.
