An opinion poll found that “Biden” does not retreat from the image of the United States in France and Germany

A poll on Monday showed that the reputation of the United States as a leading global power in France and Germany was damaged by Washington’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has killed nearly 600,000 Americans.

On the eve of President Joe Biden’s trip to Europe, the poll conducted by the German Marshall Fund and the Bertelsmann Foundation showed that he has not regained the standing of the United States as it was before COVID-19 struck. China’s reputation has increased slightly.

According to US research papers published on March 26, the United States under Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump could have prevented nearly 400,000 deaths with a more effective strategy.

The study of attitudes in 11 countries said that “the first three months of the Biden administration did not affect French and German views of American influence in the world.”

“These numbers are in line with the results of the 2020 survey, which are down about 10 points from the pre-epidemic numbers, in favor of China.”

The survey found that this is similar to the perception prevailing in the United States that the United States’ influence has increased abroad.

Biden will begin his first European tour as president on Wednesday to attend summits of the Group of Seven, NATO and the European Union. He faces the challenge of restoring transatlantic relations damaged by Trump, whose withdrawal from international agreements and sharp criticism of NATO has undermined European confidence in Washington.

Only 51% of Germans see the United States as a reliable partner, and this share rises to 60% in France, 67% in Great Britain and 76% in Poland. Less than a quarter of Turks trust the United States. The survey shows that most Americans view the European Union as a reliable partner.

The majority of respondents surveyed still believe that the United States should be involved in defense and security in Europe, with the exception of Sweden, where opinions are divided, and Turkey.

The survey was conducted online between March 29 and April 13 and surveyed 1,000 adults in each of 11 countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.
