Fastned express freight company is building one of the largest express charging stations in Europe with car manufacturer Tesla. It should be in Oxford, UK. There will be 14 EV fast chargers plus 12 Tesla proprietary superchargers. The two companies are building with City of Oxford and Pivot Power, a British company that develops batteries for electric cars.

In the fast charging station, 10 cars can be initially charged at the same time. In 20 minutes, cars can continue their path of up to 300 kilometers. The electricity is obtained from the sun and wind, and partly generated by the large roof of the plant’s solar panels. The fast charging station can also be expanded with 4 additional fast chargers.

According to Fastned, which has been developing the fast charging infrastructure in Europe since 2012, the UK’s electric vehicle charging capacity is limited and this so called Oxford Superhub contributes to the country’s shipping infrastructure. The number of fully electric cars in the UK is also growing rapidly, according to Fastned.

Fastned CEO Michel Langsall says that “hundreds of these sites” are still in demand in the UK and that the company wants to enter and remain in talks with landowners and partners. According to Pivot Power, which is part of the larger French energy group EDF Renewables, Oxford Superhub is the first of 40 locations the company is developing in the UK.

At the end of last year, Fastned and Tesla had already opened Germany’s largest express charging station. It is located near Düsseldorf at the crossroads of Cruz Hilden.
