China and the United States decided to form a joint working group on climate change. This came in a statement by the Chinese delegation that participated in the two-day consultations in Anchorage (Alaska) between the two countries.

This was the Biden government’s first high-level meeting. The negotiations started with nothing but smoothly. The freshmen spoke of the “difficult and direct” conversations. For example, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed Chinese displeasure in a statement about his concerns about Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the persecution of the Uyghurs.

    Outright and constructive

The new China News Agency (Xinhua) reported that the Chinese negotiators described the talks as “frank, in-depth and constructive” despite the lack of major breakthroughs in bilateral relations. The two sides “have expressed their willingness to improve cooperation or coordination on climate change,” Xinhua wrote.

Both countries are also said to have indicated that they are once again open to diplomatic relations and want to continue communication in order to prevent misunderstandings and conflicts in the future.

In the past year, relations between the two countries have soured greatly, with journalists expelled from the country and the Chinese Consulate in Houston closed, and after that China did the same with the US consulate in Chengdu.

After the two-day summit in Anchorage, Chinese foreign policy chief Yang Jiechi described the negotiations as “constructive and beneficial. But he noted,” Of course, there are still differences. “
