Earlier this year, Sony Pictures signed a deal with Netflix over the exclusive broadcast rights for movie releases from 2022, as well as the necessary old titles and some of the new originals they will be producing. It doesn’t appear to be an entirely exclusive agreement, since Disney has now also signed a contract with Sony Pictures for movie releases from 2022 to 2026, with a number of older titles arriving in service as well.

The Netflix deal guarantees exclusive rights to post-release movies and to Blu-ray / video on demand, nearly nine months after their release in theaters. The Disney deal starts after this period, during which time the movies are usually shown on cable TV or other networks.

In addition to the new movie rights, old titles are also coming to Disney +, including Spider-Man. This content is also coming to Hulu, another Disney streaming service currently operating in the US and coming to Europe later in 2021. A slew of new titles will already be added from June.

It is not known how much money was included in the agreement between Sony Pictures and Disney. “This agreement underlines an important part of our film distribution strategy, which is to maximize the value of each of our films by making them available to consumers in all windows with a wide range of major partners,” said Keith Le Joy, CEO of Sony Pictures at Sony Pictures. . statement.
