An interesting statement from Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group. De Meo says no Renault or Dacia model will soon be able to go faster than 180 km / h. The goal: to improve road safety.

During a shareholder meeting, Renault CEO Luca de Meo made a statement that could count on a reaction. The crack noses between us are terrified of the idea, the other side of the country of cars will undoubtedly find it a logical step: In the future, no Renault or Dacia car will go faster than 180 km / h. The next electric descendant that Renault will soon add to the Megane family, will be Renault’s first electronically controlled top speed car. The production version of the Mégane eVision Concept planned for 2022 will be able to reach a top speed of 160 km / h, according to De Meo. In addition, Renault will soon introduce an intelligent adaptive cruise control system that adjusts the speed based on information about road signs and information that the system extracts, among other things, from the navigation system. Thanks to this system, called the Safety Coach, the Renault and Dacia models equipped with it will soon slow down, for example, to the bends and rotors.

The safety coach goes one step further. The system will also distribute ‘safety scores’ to drivers. These scores are maintained so that deviations from norm and “unsafe driving behavior” can be tracked. According to the CEO, this could lead to lower premiums for “safe drivers” in cooperation with insurance companies, according to a French media report. The ANWB, among other things, already offers car insurance that gives you a discount on your premium for “good driving style”.

Since 2020, Volvo has already set the top speed for its cars at 180 km / h. It is not yet known if the speed limit announced by De Meo will also apply to Alpine cars.
