The United States and the European Union simultaneously imposed punitive measures on Russia. Washington has punished seven top Russians for poisoning opposition leader Alexei Navalny. A US intelligence report stated that the Russian government was responsible for the poisoning.

A US government official said: “Intelligence has confidently determined that FSB officers used the neurotoxin Novichok to poison Navalny on August 20, 2020.”

The sanctions were imposed in consultation with the European Union. The European Union announced similar actions against the Russian Attorney General, the head of the so-called Commission of Inquiry of the immediate head and the investigation of major criminal cases, the head of the prison system and the head of the National Guard, to prosecute opposition leader Navalny. And suppress the protests.

Two of them are also on the US sanctions list. The other five Russians facing US sanctions are the two deputy defense ministers, the head of the Federal Security Service, the head of President Putin’s policy division, and former prime minister Sergey Kerenko. In addition, the FSB and a number of scientific institutes are placed on the list.

Navalny is transferred to the Vladimir region, where he is serving a sentence of 2.5 years imprisonment in a penal colony. Navalny was arrested in Russia after recovering from his poisoning in Germany. As a result, he was unable to comply with the notification requirements of a previous lawsuit. As a result, he still had to serve a suspended prison sentence.
