International Jewels: Australian Supercars Show

International Jewels: Australian Supercars Show

Brian Rodriguez, February 24, 2021
The Repco Supercars is one of the most popular racing categories in Australia. The V8 Championship contains fourteen season events spread over thirty-two races. The twelve teams of twenty-four drivers lead different types of races.

The previous V8 Supercars Championship features a unique concept. There are different types of races, each with different degrees. A regular weekend usually contains two races, but sometimes three or four races and varies greatly.

For example, there are Supersprint races. Qualifications are especially important for Supersprint races. Drivers only have fifteen minutes for the Saturday race and twenty minutes for the Sunday race to determine the right time.

Superstreet races, as the name suggests, are street races. The qualifiers take place on a Friday or Saturday, after which the top ten will compete in the penalty shootout qualifiers on Sunday, for the top ten on the grid during the race.

Then there is the Enduro Cup. This is the most special and most famous trophy in the Repco Supercars. There are three long-distance races per year: the Sandown 500, the Gold Coast 600 (two 300 km races) and the Bathurst 1000. The Adelaide 500 is seen as a mixture of the Superstreet and long-distance races.

Enduro races are run with two runners. The second contestant will have their own free training sessions on Friday (at most events, in addition to the Enduro races as well). The second drivers are often people who have been in business for some time, but do not complete a full-time program. In addition, they are often very talented little knights who can prove themselves.

Bathurst 1000

Bathurst 1000 is the most famous race of all time and also the most important race in Australia. The long-distance race is held at Mount Panorama in New South Wales. Winners of the 1,000 km race will receive the Peter Brook Cup in honor of the deceased contestant who won the Bathurst 1000 race nine times.

Most points can also be earned during Bathrust 1000. The graph above details the number of points that can be collected during each weekend and at each location.

Rivalry

As with any close racing class, crashes and frustrations are common. Drivers are not afraid to show their Australian temperament both on and off the asphalt. Pushing each other on the bumper and then discussing it loud and clear in public with all the media about it is a pervasive phenomenon in Repco Supercars’ championships.

Brands also have a mutual rivalry. Holden vs. Ford was the fight everyone came to see from 1995 to 2012. A new project in 2013 opened the doors for Nissan, Mercedes and Volvo. Unfortunately, these three brands have already left the Repco Supercars championship stadium. 2021 is now the last year for Holden Commodore. Chevrolet will replace it next year. Ford has also been driving Mustangs from last year. Planned upgrade to the third generation of cars in 2022.

The most famous teams have been participating for several years. The iconic Triple Eight Race Engineering team has been in operation since 2003, including a team in the SuperCars2 junior series. Additionally, names like Walkinshaw Andretti United and Erebus Motorsport have been in the class for years. But with the drivers, current champ Scott McLaughlin has stopped to drive Indycar in the US. This means that a new champion will be crowned this season anyway.

In honor of the start of the 2021 Repco Supercars season this weekend, we’ll be sharing the tournament’s rich history and records in a subsequent article. Stay tuned!
