Millions of Texans are running out of electricity while it’s unprecedentedly cold. A US power grid operator is shutting down nearly 3 million customers temporarily to avoid uncontrolled power outages while there is a standard demand for electricity due to cold.

The National Guard is used to transport the elderly to shelters. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement on Monday that Texas reservists are helping local government agencies move residents to 135 cold-weather shelters set up in the second-largest state in the United States.

The network operator takes turns cutting off the supply to clients. The authorities call to reduce energy consumption. Because of the cold, not all fuels can be used for generators. Bad weather has also nearly halved wind energy production.

US President Biden declared a state of emergency for Texas to allow aid after taking temperatures from -2 to -22 degrees Celsius. With Texas, most of the United States was in winter grip. There was also a blackout in Louisiana, which borders Texas. Even in Mexico, at least 400,000 network operator customers were without electricity.
