The prosecutors’ first job – members of the House of Representatives – was to convince senators that the constitution allows former senior officials like the president to be removed, even after they are left in office. Trump’s attorneys and a number of Republicans believe the constitution states that impeachment is only possible if the person is still in office. To this end, Democratic prosecutors cited a number of precedents to the contrary, i.e. impeachment measures after a period of office.
