The Dutch Municipal Association (VNG) is concerned about the “take-back approach” that Foreign Minister Alexandra van Hooflin is taking (Finance) in the benefit case. For example, it is indicated that private parties are not yet cooperating sufficiently in canceling the debts of victims.
VNG has written a letter to the Cabinet on this matter in which he provides “proposals for what to do next.”
For example, according to VNG, the Cabinet should arrange for people who are victims of the case to get a “debt free new start.” Moreover, people who have paid off their unjustified debts to the tax authorities should be compensated for the “urgency” they have been in for years.
In fact, the € 30,000 compensation promised to the victims should go to the deluded parents. Earlier it turned out that the government canceled all these people’s debts.
The Cabinet has called on private companies to cancel the debt, but sees little movement on that. Victims should be clear “in the short term” about what will happen to their debt, according to VNG.

Earlier this week, Van Hoefelen wrote that municipalities can offer a “personalized approach” to victims. “With this, the Tax and Customs Administration is throwing its troubles on the fence and putting the municipalities in front of it,” said Peter Heijkob, a consultant to the CDA in Dordrecht, on behalf of VNG.
