Even in Smoke: Canopy growth leaves NL

Canopy Growth, a company that was slated to open a cannabis planting facility in St. John’s, is “packing up and leaving the county before it opens its doors.”

In March, the company announced 500 layoffs linked to the closure of its growth facilities in British Columbia.

At the time, the county government indicated that its St. John’s facility was “in full swing”. Now, Canopy Growth is shutting down a number of locations across the country affecting around 220 employees nationwide.

The company will pay approximately $ 1.9 million in reduced profit margin rates. 14 employees were affected at the facility, located in the East White Hills.

Additionally, the company today announced that it will cease operations at its Fredericton, Edmonton and Bowmanville locations, as well as outdoor growth operations in Saskatchewan.

Canopy says such decisions are not easy at all.

Opposition leader Chase Crosby, who has long raised questions about the deal with the government to develop the site in the East White Hills, called a press conference at 1:30 p.m. NDP leader Alison Coffin will follow at 1:45 pm.

Natural Resources Secretary Andrew Parsons will also address the media after the COVID-19 regional update today at 2:35 pm.

VOCM News will provide the details as soon as they become available.
