The US Department of Justice is discussing a deal with the CFO of Huawei Technologies Co. Meng Wanzhou would allow her to return to China from Canada, in exchange for an admission of wrongdoing in a criminal case that has strained Beijing’s relations with the United States and Canada. Familiar with the matter he said.

Lawyers for Ms Meng, who is facing bank and bank transfer fraud charges related to alleged violations of US sanctions on Iran on behalf of Huawei, spoke to Ministry of Justice officials in recent weeks about the possibility of a “delayed prosecution agreement,” according to the sources. .

Under such an agreement, which plaintiffs usually use with companies but rarely give to individuals, Ms. Meng would be required to acknowledge some of the allegations against her but prosecutors would agree to delay and drop the charges later if she cooperates, he said.

Some people said that Mrs. Meng had so far been against the proposed deal, believing she had done nothing wrong. She declined to comment through a Huawei spokesperson. A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice declined to comment. Canadian officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment

Ms Meng was caught two years ago while flying planes in Vancouver, and was locked up in the city where she had a home. It has since fought extradition to the United States – a process that allows for multiple appeals that could take years to resolve – and its status has embodied many of China’s attempts in China to thwart the country’s global rise.
