Here’s a summary of what happened on US election night while you slept:
- As of 5:15 a.m., the Associated Press has yet to call the presidential race because none of the candidates has received the 270 electoral college votes needed to claim victory. Several states that were battlefields, including Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania remained very close to calling for any candidate.
- At 4 a.m., the numbers were according to the Associated Press of 238 votes for Biden and 213 for Trump.
- At 2:21 am, Donald Trump falsely told the audience in the White House that “We’ve already won this election” over Democrat Joe Biden and said he would refer the election to the Supreme Court.
- The Democrats are close to retaining control of the House, but they lost at least six incumbents and failed to drive out any Republicans in the preliminary results.
- After 12 a.m. EST, Donald Trump was expected to be the winner in Florida, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Montana and Texas, while Joe Biden was expected to be the winner in Maine, Hawaii and Arizona.
- Biden also upset Nebraska’s 2nd congressional district, the constituency that includes Omaha and went to Trump in 2016. Trump kept the other four Nebraska counties.
- Global stock markets are caught in volatile uncertainty due to the unfolding US electoral drama.
