It was already the 50th Grand Prix win of Verstappen’s career. The 26-year-old Dutchman took the lead at the Circuit of the Americas midway through the race and took the win convincingly in Texas, which attracted 432,000 spectators throughout the weekend.
Verstappen started from sixth, because he crossed the track limits on his best lap and had to set his fastest time. “It’s unfortunate,” he answered curtly, “but it makes Sunday more enjoyable.” After winning his first Sprint Shootout, he was never threatened later in the day.
Briton Lewis Hamilton came close to overtaking the three-time world champion in his Mercedes at the end of the race, but he was forced to settle for second place. Lando Norris finished third in his McLaren. Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s Mexican teammate, finished fifth.
It was Verstappen’s 15th win of the season and his 50th overall. Next week in Mexico, the three-time world champion will be able to draw level with Alain Prost. In addition, Verstappen still has a chance this season to surpass Sebastian Vettel, who has achieved 53 victories in his career.
