The upcoming WhatsApp update is expected to bring an important change that will protect your photos from misuse. These are the details.
In April, there have already been several changes to WhatsApp aimed at improving user experience and data protection. One of the next updates to the popular messenger follows a similar approach.
As the specialized portal WABetainfo reports, it's all about your profile photos. As of now, it is possible to download each user's profile picture on both Android and iOS versions of WhatsApp.
Although the messenger does not offer a separate button for this purpose, it is possible to display it in a large format after clicking on the corresponding profile photo. After that, all it takes is a screenshot and the profile picture will permanently end up in the smartphone's memory. From there it can be manipulated at will, used in any way, and republished.
WhatsApp will now prevent taking screenshots of profile photos in one of the upcoming updates, according to the report. If others try to download your profile picture via screenshot, you will not be notified of this process, as is the case with Snapchat. However, the screenshot cannot be captured and is acknowledged with an error message.
It is still unclear when the update will be rolled out to better protect your privacy. The question whether the change will be reflected in the Android and iOS versions of the messenger cannot yet be answered. If you're worried about your profile picture being used incorrectly, you can put a stop to it now.
In the app settings under “Data Protection” -> “Profile Photo”, you will find options to limit or completely remove the visibility of your profile photo for certain user groups. By the way: If you are wondering why WhatsApp suddenly changes color – here is the answer.
